Geography

Outremont is a borough of the city of Montreal located to the north of the downtown area. It is bordered by the districts of Mont Royal, Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Le Plateau de Mont Royal, Ville-Marie, and Cotes-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-De-Grace. The Outremont borough gained world fame in 1927 for being the first community in the world to use a snow blower to manage and clear its streets during the winter.

History 

Formerly named Cote Sainte-Catherine, Outremont was renamed in 1875 for the large estate built in 1833 by local sheriff Louis-Tancrede Bouthillier called Outre-Mont; the Outre-Mont estate still stands, and is located on McDougall Street.
During the 2002 municipal mergers, the city of Outremont was assimilated into Montreal proper and did not re-establish its autonomy when the referendums were up for renewal in 2004.

Demographics 

With an area of almost 4 kilometers squared and a population of 22,933, Outremont is one of the smallest boroughs of Montreal. The residents are predominantly French speaking, however in recent years the borough has developed a significant Hasidic Jewish community as well. Hasidic Jews now account for 20% of Outremont's population.

Municipal 

Outremont is managed by a mayoral office and divided into four districts. The mayor's office has been the center of controversy over the past few years when it was discovered city officials were using public funds to buy alcohol for themselves; Mayor Stephane Harbour was asked to step down due to this scandal, and at the end of 2007 Marie Cinq-Mars was elected to take his place.

Despite its small size, Outremont is home to many interesting cultural landmarks, including the Salle Claude-Champagne, the Outremont Theater, the Saint-Gregoire-l'Illuminateur Armenian Cathedral, and a portion of the Montreal University campus. The Mount Royal Cemetery is also found in Outremont, one of the oldest rural cemeteries in North America. Outremont has participated in several goodwill initiatives and currently has two sister cities across the world: Oakwood, Ohio and Le Vesinet, France.
