Geography 

Westmount is a borough of the City of Montreal located on the south eastern portion of the Island of Montreal. It has the second highest population density of any municipality in Canada, with almost 21,000 residents living in an area of 4 kilometers squared. It is a predominantly affluent residential area that is known for its high quality of family living within the city. Bordered with NDG to the West and the Downtown core to the East.

History 

Westmount was incorporated as an individual municipality in 1874 and was officially merged into Montreal proper in 2002. Unhappy with the assimilation into Montreal, the residents of Westmount voted to rescind the merger in 2004. The community is comprised predominantly of English-speaking inhabitants who claim British ancestry. However, over 76% of the borough's Anglophones are also fluent in French. It has been an extremely affluent community since its early days as a British enclave in the city, and today oscillates with West Vancouver and Rosedale as the wealthiest community in Canada, with the average household income at over $142,000.

Westmount has a rich cultural history. Westmount is home to the first public library in Canada and is doted with many different canadian historic sites. Westmount has an incredible amount of public and private green space. A floral clock is a well known Westmount landmark along with the community center, Victoria hall. Victoria Hall commenmorates the late monarch and is home to the first public auditorium. 

Municipal 

The city government is comprised of eight councilors who each oversee one of the borough's districts. They work with the mayor, currently Karin Marks, who also represents the city on the Montreal Agglomeration Council. In addition to the white population, Westmount is also home to a fairly sizable foreign born immigrant population that has developed since the early 1990s. There are immigrant enclaves throughout the borough, ranging from countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, making Spanish, Portuguese, Armenian, German, and Arabic common languages heard in Westmount.

Key Features

While predominantly a residential area, Westmount also features a few commercial areas on Sherbrooke Street and Saint Catherine Street. However, the feature the city would most like to be known for is the number of higher and exclusive education facilities it boasts. Westmount is home to Dawson College, the largest Cegep in Quebec, as well as the most acclaimed private secondary schools, Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School, Villa Sainte-Marcelline, Selwyn House School, and The Study.

Westmount is home to many famous individuals from a range of vocations, including politics, entertainment, and sports. Famed folk singer Leonard Cohen, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and comedienne Caroline Rhea all make their homes in the Westmount borough of Montreal.
