Every valley trip gets one. The forecast turns, the lake looks grey and uninviting, and a group that had planned to be on the beach is suddenly standing in the kitchen asking what now. The good news is that Invermere is a real town rather than a resort strip, so there is more to fall back on than you might expect.

What follows is ordered roughly by how much of the day it will absorb — because on a wet day, that is genuinely the useful way to sort things.

Best Times to Go

The Morning It Sets In

Start with the Windermere Valley Museum. It is small, it is local, and it does a genuinely good job of explaining how this valley came to look the way it does — which makes the rest of the week make more sense. An hour, comfortably more if you read everything.

The Invermere Public Library is a short walk away and is a better option than it sounds with children in tow, particularly if the alternative is a house full of people who have run out of patience with each other.

The Middle of the Afternoon

This is when a group needs something physical. Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena runs public skating through the winter months, and a couple of hours on the ice does more for a restless group than anything else on this list.

Just south towards Windermere there is bowling, which is the reliable answer for a mixed-age group where nobody can agree. Ozzie's Amusements sits nearby for the same reason.

When It Clears Just Enough

Valley rain is often patchy rather than settled. When it lifts, Pothole Park in the middle of town is a short, easy walk that does not require committing to a full hike, and it is close enough that you can turn back the moment it starts again.

The other option is to drive north to Radium and get in the hot pools. Rain matters far less when you are already in the water, and it is one of the few outings that is arguably better in poor weather than good.

The Evening

Invermere Brewing Co is a straightforward answer for the adults. For food, Vesano on 7th Avenue is a short walk from most of downtown and works equally well as a sit-down meal or something to carry back to the property.

If the group would rather not go out at all, that is often the right call — a wet evening in is exactly what the fireplace, the games and the hot tub are for.

What to Bring

Wet-weather days in the valley are rarely cold, but they are persistent, and the mistake most visitors make is packing for the forecast they hoped for.

Bring:

• A waterproof layer rather than an umbrella — it is usually breezy enough that umbrellas are useless

• Shoes you do not mind getting wet, and a second pair to change into

• Swimwear in the car, so a detour to Radium never needs a trip back to the house

• Cash or card for the smaller places, some of which are card-only and some of which are not

• Patience, if you are travelling with anyone under ten

Back at the property:

• Something to cook, so a wet evening does not force a second trip out

• A film nobody has seen, agreed on in advance rather than argued about at eight o'clock

• Towels by the door if the hot tub is getting used between showers

• A drying spot for coats — over a radiator beats over the furniture

A rained-off day is not a lost one here. Most of our guests say the wet afternoons ended up being the part of the week where everyone actually sat down together.
